FREQUENT QUESTIONS WE RECEIVE AT PUBLIC WORKS

Q) If I have a water or sewer-related problem in my home, who should I call?

A) The Longmeadow Water & Sewer Department will respond to water and sewer emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  If you have a water or sewer problem during normal working hours 7:30AM - 4:00PM Mon. - Fri. call 567-3400, after normal working hours and weekends call the Police Department at 567-3311 and the on call crew will be dispatched to your home.  THERE IS A CHARGE FOR EMERGENCY SERVICE ON HOUSE CONNECTIONS.

Q) Which department takes care of trees on the tree belt?

A) Longmeadow Department of Public Works is in charge of the tree belt trees.  If you have any concerns, call the D.P.W at 567-3400. This department can also assist you in questions about Christmas tree pick up.

Q) Who can answer my recycling and trash questions?

A)  Central Mass Disposal is under contract for residential pickup.  Trash  and recycling pickup is once per week. For more information go to Trash and Recycling page . or call D.P.W. at 567-3400

Q) Where can I pick up a recycling container?

A) You can obtain a recycling container at the Public Works Department at 31 Pondside Road.

Q) Why are you digging up a street you just paved?

A) Before the Town paves a street, all utilities are notified and given the opportunity to do any work requiring excavation before the street is paved.  After the Town paves a street, no one is allowed to excavate in it for five years, except for emergencies.  Obviously, if a utility detects a gas or a water leak, we want those leaks repaired immediately.  In addition, if a business needs additional water lines to expand or a homeowner needs to repair or replace a sewer, they would receive a permit.

Q) Who do I call if a street light is out.

A) You can call the Public Works Department at 567-3400.   Please have information on location of light. eg: house number, pole number, nearest intersection or cross street and we will report it to WMECO.
