Long Meddowe Days are Coming to the Town Green

The annual Long Meddowe Days celebration returns to the Longmeadow Town Green this year on Saturday, May 19th and Sunday, May 20th. Last year’s event was one of the best attended with many new features and attractions. All of the familiar crowd pleasers- including the Civil War re-enactors and continuous entertainment –will be back. Organizers are excited about this year’s event!

“This is the 33rd year of Long Meddowe Days and it continues to change and get better every year” said the festival’s committee chairman, Eric Craven.

Long Meddowe Days is the primary fundraiser for the Longmeadow Historical Society. The proceeds are used to fund educational programs, research, and for the maintenance of the Storrs House, a town landmark.

Longmeadow’s colonial history continues to be a key focal point during this event.
“A strong connection with our colonial history is one of the things that make Long Meddowe Days so special” said Craven.

Visit the Storrs House or take a walking tour on Longmeadow Street filled with local history. Learn more on an “Olde Burying Yard” tour with a local expert. Visit the Historical Society’s tent on the Town Green to view some interesting treasures from the Storrs House. There will also be Longmeadow history related items available for sale.

“Gallery on the Green” is returning this year. Local artists showcase and sell their works in a large tented area. “Many people were thrilled last year that we offered more art, so we’re bringing back the ‘Gallery’. We’re excited about it,” said Craven.

Visitors to Long Meddowe Days can experience living, breathing history through an encounter with the 9th Massachusetts Battery. The authentic Civil War encampment makes its home on the Longmeadow Town Green throughout the weekend, complete with campfires, rifle salutes and bugles, courtesy of sponsors Glenmeadow and F.L. Roberts. This unit’s 10-pound Parrott cannon is fired every hour during the festival while re-enactors in full battle dress play the roles of several members of the Civil War battery that fought at Gettysburg. The soldiers will make special presentations about Longmeadow’s own Civil War hero, Lt. Howard Burnham, and the role the town played in that conflict. The 9th also educates visitors about women’s experiences during the Civil War. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the original formation of the 9th Massachusetts Battery.

For antique and craft lovers there will be a varied and interesting selection of vendors this year. The Historical Society is continuing its efforts to bring high-quality handmade crafts and antiques, attracting vendors from across New England and beyond.

The Tim Paige Memorial Road Race- a long time favorite event- kicks off the weekend with registration beginning at 6:45 am on Saturday, with a 7:30 am start for walkers and 8:00 am start for runners.

Walk over to Storrs Library on Saturday, May 19th where the Friends of Storrs Library will be holding a used book sale from 11 am – 5 pm. All proceeds are used to benefit the Storrs Library.

On Saturday evening, after the day’s activities conclude, families are invited to an old fashioned community “campfire” on the Town Green to gather, toast marshmallows, enjoy music and celebrate Longmeadow’s history. Come and join us for supper at 6 pm. Grills will be available for use. Parents are asked to accompany children to the campfire.

Both days on center stage there will be new musical acts. They will add even more talent to the usual strong showing by our local talented musicians. The entertainment venue is sponsored by PeoplesBank.

In addition to the always-popular kettle corn and the Boy Scouts and Knights of Columbus food tents, visitors can expect a wide range of food offerings again this year. “Plan to enjoy lunch while listening to some great music on center stage”, said Craven.

There are always many activities for children at Long Meddowe Days. The popular miniature train, a climbing wall, a bounce house and fun temporary tattoos are returning favorites. The popular kids’ craft bazaar will return this year.

The annual parade will begin at 11:15 am on Sunday and will travel south on Longmeadow Street from Bay Path College to the Town Green. A lively group of floats and bands are expected for the parade that is expected to be “bigger and better” than last year’s huge success and is sponsored by Hampden Bank.

On Sunday, starting at 12 noon, there will be a Memorial Service on the Town Green to commemorate Longmeadow residents who gave their lives for our country.

“Long Meddowe Days requires lots of planning and effort. Its success is extremely important because it supports the work of the Historical Society throughout the year at the Storrs House and elsewhere”, said Craven.

In addition to the sponsors of specific events within Long Meddowe Days, the Historical Society would like to thank the general sponsors Berkshire Bank, Longmeadow Garage and United Bank.

There are still some openings for community groups and crafters to set up tables at Long Meddowe Days. Please visit www.LongMeddoweDays.org for more information, including registration forms.
