The prince of darkness : 50 years reporting in Washington
Novak, Robert D.
New York : Crown Forum, c2007.
" In this sweeping memoir, Novak offers a full account of his involvement
in the Valerie Plame CIA leak affair, while also
telling the story of his remarkable life and career, a singular journey through
a half century of stories, scandals, and personal encounters with Washington's
most powerful and colorful people. Novak has been a Washington insider since the days when the
place was a sleepy southern town and journalism was built on shoe leather and
the ability to cultivate and keep sources (not to mention the ability to hold
one's liquor). He has covered every president since Truman, known (personally
and professionally) virtually all the big movers and shakers in DC, and broken
a number of the biggest stories. Here, he puts it all into perspective. He also
reveals the extraordinary transformations that have fundamentally remade Washington, politics,
and journalism--and his own role in those transformations.--From publisher

Angela Dawson, M.D., appears to have it all: at the age of thirty-seven, she
owns a fabulous New York City apartment, a
stunning seaside house on Nantucket, and
enjoys the perks of her prosperous lifestyle. But her climb to the top was
rough, marked by a troubled childhood, a failed marriage, and the devastating
blow of bankruptcy as a primary-care internist. Painfully aware of the role of
economics in modern life, particularly in the health-care field, Angela
returned to school to earn an MBA. Armed with a shiny new degree and blessed
with determination, intelligence, and impeccable timing, Angela founded a start-up
company, Angels Healthcare, then took it public. With
her controlling interest in three busy specialty hospitals in New
York City and plans for others in Miami
and Los Angeles,
Angela's future looked very bright. Then a surge of
drug-resistant staph infections in all three
hospitals devastates Angela's carefully constructed world. Not only do the infections result in patient deaths, but the
fatalities also cause stock prices to tumble, leaving market analysts wondering
if Angela will be able to hold her empire together.New
York City medical examiners Laurie Montgomery
and Jack Stapleton are naturally intrigued by the uptick
in staph-related post-procedure deaths. Aside from
their own professional curiosity, there's a personal stake as well: Laurie and
Jack are newly married, and Jack is facing surgery to repair a torn ligament at
Angels Orthopedic Hospital.
Despite Jack's protests, Laurie can't help investigating- opening a Pandora's box of corporate intrigue that threatens not just her
livelihood, but her life with Jack as well.

The Judas strain : a Sigma force novel
Rollins, James, 1961-

Morrow, c2007.
From the depths of the Indian Ocean, a
horrific plague has arisen to devastate humankind. But it is merely a harbinger
of the doom that is to follow. Aboard a cruise liner transformed into a
makeshift hospital, Dr. Lisa Cummings and Monk Kokkalis,
operatives of SIGMA Force, search for answers to the bizarre affliction. But
there are others with far less altruistic intentions. In a savage and sudden
coup, terrorists hijack the vessel, turning a mercy ship into a floating
bio-weapons lab. A world away, SIGMA's Commander Gray
Pierce thwarts the murderous schemes of a beautiful would-be killer who holds
the first clue to the discovery of a possible cure, then joins forces with the
woman who wanted him dead. As a relentless madman dogs their every step, Gray
and his unlikely ally are pulled into an astonishing mystery buried deep in
antiquity and in humanity's genetic code.--From publisher description.

Miss Potter
Santa Monica, Calif. : Genius Products, 2007.
In an effort to give their younger brother, Norman a project to keep him busy
now that he has joined the family publishing house, the older Warne brothers
agree to publish Miss Beatrix Potter's first children's book. They don't expect
the book to sell well, but they need to keep Norman busy. As a single woman living in
Edwardian London, Beatrix suspects this endeavor may provide her with a small
measure of freedom. But she also has very specific ideas about how the book
should be published. As they work together, Norman and Beatrix become close.
After the first book is published, Beatrix goes on to a second book and that
sells well. One day at lunch, she meets the rest of Norman's family, including his sister, Millie
and the two women become fast friends. Norman
proposes, but Beatrix's parents object to the marriage proposal. After much
argument, they agree to let Beatrix marry Norman
provided they wait until the end of the summer.

Burbank, CA : Touchstone Home Entertainment : Distributed by Buena
Vista Home Entertainment, [2006].
Ray Porter is a button-down 50-something executive who reaches out to a much
younger woman as his Los Angeles
playmate. Mirabelle, a 20-something with a pile of promises, debt, and
depression, fades away into a slow corner of Saks, while trying to sell
unneeded formal gloves. She's a wisp of a person, with a cat who doesn't love
her, and when she finds a suitor, it's Jeremy, a scruffy artist who babbles on
about speakers. When the gentlemanly Porter calls, his appearance in her life
begins to make her whole. It also immediately sets her up for sadness - Ray
thinks of Mirabella as a precious outlet for sex, while Mirabelle, very
mistakenly, sees Ray as a potential lifelong mate.
