Longmeadow Police Department

r.a.d. KIDS is a dynamic and exciting program where your child will learn about safety awareness and physical defense. It is the most comprehensive, life-changing children’s educational program of its' kind.

The Longmeadow Police Department currently has two certified instructors, Officer Pamela Chaplin and Officer Nathan Swistak. Their objective is to provide educational opportunities for children and parents, concerning awareness and self-defense strategies, instilling confidence and reducing the possibility of adverse physical control and or harm.

The officers goal is to build enough confidence so that the child has personal empowerment over decisions that need to be made in every day events. These events include school, home, out-and- about, and vehicle safety, good, bad and uncomfortable touch, and stranger’s tricks.

The classes are designed for five to seven year old and 8-10 year old children and their parents. Each class last approximately one and a half hours for five consecutive days. Upon completion of the course, each student is awarded a certificate and is invited back to any r.a.d. KIDS program to practice the skills learned.

Officer Chaplin and Officer Swistak work with small groups limited to twelve students, which allows a more personal bond between instructor and student. Parents or close relatives are encouraged to attend each class as it affords the opportunity for the interaction of child and responsible adult, which is the key to opening the cycle of specific problems that may be confronting the child.

So how do you enroll in a r.a.d. KIDS course ? It’s as easy as contacting the Longmeadow Parks and Recreation Department at 565-4160 for dates and locations of the next class.
