Going Places with Navigator

You have mastered the basic elements of navigation. It is time to leave and venture out onto the World-Wide Web.

The "Go To" Box | Exercise "Going Places"

1. The "Go To" Box

To go directly to a place, we must know the address. Every computer connected to the Web and every Web page stored on that computer has a unique address. Every computer connected to the Web and every Web page stored on that computer has a unique address. In Internet lingo this is called a Uniform Resource Locator, usually shortened to URL.

For example, the web address for the Longmeadow town website is: http://www.longmeadow.org

You can enter an address directly in the Location Toolbar bar beneath the Toolbar (as we have done in the diagram below), or click on File in the menu bar and select Open Page to get a long rectangular 'Open Page' window.

2. Exercise - Going Places

TIP: When you click on the location bar, Netscape will highlight the current address. You can type your new URL right on top. Don't delete, don't backspace, just type on top of the highlighted location address.

Boston.com: http://www.boston.com
Smithsonian Institution:
http://www.si.edu
USAToday:
http://www.usatoday.com

TIP: Don't enter the http://. Navigator assumes you want to go to a Web site.

Watch what happens to the Netscape logo and to the Progress Bar at the bottom.
