| Navigator has a number of controls for viewing Internet webpages. Some are located on the right side of the screen and others are located on the bottom of the screen |
To the right is the scroll bar. Often the page you are viewing will be several screens long. It is always a good idea to scroll to the bottom.
Some tips for moving up and down the page. First, click once in the frame you want to scroll through. (Reminder - the text you are reading now is in the right frame.)
- Drag the elevator bar in the scroll bar to a new position.
- Click once anywhere in the scroll bar to jump to that part of the page.
- Click and hold the small down arrow in the scroll bar (or the up arrow).
- Use Pg Up and Pg Dn to move up and down a screen.
- Press the up arrow and down arrow keys to scroll one line.
At the bottom is a Status Bar and a Component Bar.
Security Padlock:
You have likely heard that the Internet is not a private place. People, keen on such things, can read your e-mail and sniff your transactions. Most of the time, this is not a concern. However, if you decide to buy something on the Internet - a book, some software, or any number of things - you will want to know that your transaction is encrypted so that the sniffers can't read your credit card number or the details of what you are buying. Look for a whole padlock at the bottom of the screen. When the padlock is whole (locked)
, you will know that you are connected to a server that will encrypt the transaction; when it is
unlocked, your transaction could be more easily tapped.
Online/Offline Indicator:
Navigator versions 4.5 and up include an icon which looks like two power cords facing each other. When the cords are plugged (see image above) Communicator is telling you that you are connected to the Internet, when they are unplugged it means you are working offline.
Progress Indicator:
Netscape will let you know that it is contacting the host, waiting for reply, how much of the file it has downloaded, and lastly, the reassuring notice, Document Done, to signify that you have received all of a World-Wide Web page.
Communicator Component Bar:
The little buttons in the far right of the bottom bar are shortcuts to Communicator tools. These buttons give quick access to :
- second Navigator screen
- Messenger for email
- newsgroups reader
- Composer for creating Web pages of your own
- Your email Address Book
